Computer problems could shut down Iowa river gauges that are crucial to flood predictions, officials warned this week. Cuts at the federal level have hampered the U.S. Geological Survey, which manages 173 gauges across the state, for years, and officials now say publicly that more contraction could force them to stop using and eventually remove some of the units.Agencies at the state, county, and local levels that use stream-flow information also pay for some of the program, and officials are looking to expand that network. But the local agencies have had to shoulder more of the burden each year as federal money dwindles. In the past, officials have found funding; Zogg said he can only recall losing a couple gauges in the past decade.
